Shiver watched once more as that distant and distracted look crossed Cascade's face. What was she thinking about? He didn't want to ask again, for fear of having another random and irrelevant question thrown at him. Still, it was obvious that her mind was somewhere else right now. As is yours... Shiver reminded himself guiltily. That strange dream... He shook his head. It was probably nothing. You've had dreams before. What make you think this one's any different? Finishing off his mouse, Shiver licked his lips to get rid of the prey juices. "What shall we do now?" He asked, glancing over at Cascade. She still looked confused, troubled even. "What's the matter?" He asked gently. "I can tell something's on your mind. Is anything bothering you?"

Cascade seemed to be snapped out of her trance. "Oh. Um..." She stared at Shiver. "Shiver, tell me the truth. Have you been having some strange dreams these past moons?" Cascade suddenly asked. "Because, well... I have. And... I think that they're messages from Starclan. I mean, why should I have them when I don't belong in any clans? Of course, I just think that they're messages from Starclan." She added that last sentence quickly, not wanting Shiver to think that she considered herself special or anything. Does Shiver even know what Starclan is? She thought silently to herself.

Shiver gasped. Was that what she was trying to ask him all along? Was this what he had agreed to having? Because if it was, then he would have been telling the truth all along! But how did she know? "Yes, actually!" He meowed, tail twitching. This time, his eyes were honest and sincere. "I have! Sorry, I was confused earlier, I really do have. It's the strangest thing!" He willed Cascade to believe him this time. "But StarClan..? I don't understand.." Shiver thought back on his dream. A name forced its way into his head. "Dawnstar..?" He mewed weakly, hoping this might trigger something in Cascade. If she knew what StarClan was, maybe she would be able shed some meaning onto the name that had troubled him in his sleep on so many countless nights.

"Oh, goodness..." Cascade sighed. "I'll have to start from the beginning..." She eyed Shiver. Can he beleive in Starclan? She'll give it a shot... "You know the cats that live in the forest that have two-part names, like, say, something along the lines of Shadowflame, Silverdust or Dapplepelt? These arn't the exact names, but they all have one thing in commen--they are two parts. Shadowflame is made up of Shadow, and flame, Silverdust is Silver and dust. Well, these are the clan cats. They have a leader, deputy, medicine cat, and a medicine cat apprentice. The rest are either kits, apprentices, or warriors. I'm not going to tell you what they all do, since it'll take too long. Now, they live in groups called "clans". Where I used to live, there were Moonclan, Emberclan, Waterclan and Shreddedclan." Cascade paused to swallow back her tears, and then continued. "Starclan is the place where deceased forest cats go. They send prophecies and dreams fortelling the future." When she finished, she broke down, her tears running free.

That explains the name! Shiver thought. So 'Dawnstar' was a Clan name, that made sense now. Still, why was he having dreams about her? He didn't even know about the Clans until now. Clearing out his thoughts, Shiver looked over at Cascade and his heart sank. He didn't like to see her so upset. "What's the matter?" He asked, pulling Cascade closer with his tail. "You miss your Clan?" As he waited for a reply, Shiver wished he had never asked. How could he be so insensitive? Surely Cascade wouldn't want to talk about her Clan right now. Without another word, Shiver brushed away Cascade's tears with his tail and wrapped it around the back of her head, pulling her closer to rest against his strong shoulder. He wished he could say something to make her feel better, but his mind was blank. All he could do was hold her tight.

Cascade sank her head on Shiver's thinly-furred shoulder, her sobs getting softer. "It's okay, Shiver." she sniffed. "You wouldn't have known, anyways." A fresh flow of tears spilled out of her eyes, and she sank even deeper into Shiver's shoulder. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she was telling herself that it was inpolite to be doing this, that her tears were making Shiver's fur soggy, but that was at the back of her mind. the rest of her screamed at her to just stay where she currently is, and savour the feeling for now.

Shiver glanced down as Cascade placed her head on his shoulder, his tail was still coiled around her neck. It felt nice, and he couldn't help but to smile a little as she spoke his name. It sounded so beautiful coming out of her sweet mouth. The feeling didn't last long though, as Cascade broke down into fresh tears and Shiver felt helpless yet again. He sighed and rested his chin on the top of her head, ruffling the fur around her ears. How did she know that he had regretted his question as soon as it had left his mouth? And before, when she so easily picked out his lie, how did she always seem to know what he was thinking? "You're a mystery." He meowed, breathing in her sweet scent, his fur glistening wet with her tears.

In spite of herself, Cascade had to smile. "I know." she breathed, inhaling Shiver's odd scent. It was odd, yes, but strangely comforting. Sniffling, she looked up into Shiver's strange dark purple eyes. She had never seen eyes like those before, but they were handsome on Shiver's face. She kept on resting her head on Shiver's strong shoulder. The weight of his tail felt comforting around her neck. She can feel that Shiver is younger than her. She had seen more sights, and experienced more things, and yet... she felt that Shiver understood more things than she. Curling her tail around herself, a rumbling purr started in her throat. "Thanks." she whispered.

Shiver smiled again as Cascade began to purr, even wider this time. Well, I must be doing something right. He thought to himself. Then he looked away awkwardly as Cascade met his eyes. So what, you can't even look at her anymore? "So... Umm... Why are we getting these dreams?" Shiver wondered out loud, trying to lift the awkward atmosphere. "Wouldn't... Wouldn't these... these Clan cats... be getting the dreams instead of us? You know, if they really were from StarClan?" Shiver looked up at the sky and blinked curiously. He was starting to believe it too, that StarClan really did exist, and that they were sending him these strange dreams. He could feel Dawnstar's eyes burning into him and trembled uneasily. Suddenly, he knew that she was watching over him. Dawnstar, what do you want?

Cascade sighed. "I don't know." she meowed, her eyes turning up to the sky also. "But... I know that Starclan is trying to tell us something..." She shivered. Whisperstar... what do you want, and why? Cascade thought. Why me? You must know that I have tried to live the life of a clan cat before... and failed. Why bring back memories of Moonclan? And all of my clanmates... Cascade suddenly started to feel uncomfortable. Is Whisperstar... trying to take over her body? No, Cascade. The clans are in grave danger. You are one of the chosen four to prevent Underclan from taking over the whole forest. "Wha..." Do not speak out loud, young one. We are Starclan. We can read your thoughts.

Shiver blinked once again and tried to shake Dawnstar out of his mind. He looked back down at Cascade, only to see that she had turned her face up to the sky above. "But why us?" He asked again, addressing her neck this time because her eyes were not available at the moment. "What could StarClan possibly have to tell a couple of cats like us? We don't even belong to Clans!" Even as he said this, Shiver had the sudden urge to go out and find a Clan, maybe even join, but Cascade didn't answer. Instead, her face was over come by shock and Shiver yowled in alarm. "Cascade!" He exclaimed, "What... What's happening?" Shiver jumped to his paws and started to pace tight circles around the midnight-blue she-cat.

Cascade struggled with her feelings. Part of her wanted to run away from this wodden house in hopes that Whisperstar's voice will stop following her, part of her wanted to stay here and hear what Whisperstar wanted to tell her, part of her wanted to bury her face in Shiver's neck and stay like that until Whisperstar stopped hauting her, and another part of her suddenly wanted to join a clan. Cascade, don't be afraid. Starclan is here to guard you, not to haunt you. "Go away!" Cascade yowled out, her eyes slowly being taken over by fear. Turning around in circles, she shook her head from side to side. "Stop haunting me!" I know that this is scary at first, but dear one, please don't be afraid.

Shiver jumped back sharply, a little hurt. He then realized that Cascade wasn't speaking to him at all, but to a strange StarClanic force. He could almost smell the fear coming off her, it was close to unbearable, and he found himself wrapping his body around her for comfort. "It's okay," He whispered into her quivering ear, her fear-scent was becoming a little overwhelming, but Shiver just ignored it. Cascade needed him right now. "I'm here, I won't let them hurt you." How could they? Can't they see how scared she is? Why won't they stop? Shiver's mind was screaming. When Cascade first spoke of StarClan, she made them sound so wonderful, now he wasn't so sure. They can't be all that great if they were haunting her like this. She was truly terrified!

Cascade. The voice was more commanding now, more urgent. Listen to me, please. Cascade's fear was slowly being replaced by curiousity. Taking a deep breath, she sat down, a peaceful look slowly taking over her eyes. Okay, Whisperstar. Why did you send me the dream, and why are you talking to me right now? The clans are in grave danger. Underclan is planning on making them sacrafice a member of their own clan. They're going to keep on doing this, until the clans are so weak that they will barely manage to feed themselves. Cascade felt a shiver of fear pass through her. And how can I help? I'm just a loner. No, Cascade. You are more than just a loner. You have lived the life of a clan cat. You know the dangers and sacrafices of living in the forest. You know that warrior code, Cascade. And you know that Starclan will never do anything like this. You are the key to the clan's success. Okay, I'll accept. Cascade thought calmly, without hesitation. But only if you promise that you'll always be by my side. I promise.

((If you're not even going to acknowledge Shiver... See, I can't really write anything now.))
Shiver opened his eyes as Cascade's body slowly began to relax. He didn't realize it, but his eyes had been squeezed shut the whole time, his muzzle pressed into the back of Cascade's head. Now he released her, uncurling his body from around her own and letting out the breath that he had been holding in. This too, the very fact that he had been holding in his own breath, did not occur to Shiver until now. He looked down into those beautiful eyes, they still weren't quite focused yet, but at least they weren't filled with fear either. That, at least, was a definite plus. Shiver could tell that Cascade was just beginning to come back now. "What was that?" He hissed with concern in his voice. Never before had the loner seen anything like it.
((That's fine. There we go. Sorry about that, I was really crabby this morning.))
