Tearheart approached the great Chestnut Tree. She ducked under the low hanging branches and turned to face Silverpaw. "Ready to start your training?" she asked. Without waiting for a reply, she bounded up to a spot where she knew the ground was soft. "Okay, let's start. Attack me."

Silverpaw scrutinized Tearheart's position, then his own. An idea sprang into his head. Yes, he decided after thinking it over, it might work. The silver apprentice broke into a run, racing towards his mentor. He mustered his strength, and leaped into the air.

Tearheart was impressed by how Silverpaw used both his agility and strength to launch his attack. Still, she stood her ground until Silverpaw was inches away from her. At last minute, she dodged out of the way and landed swiftly on her feet. She turned around to see if Silverpaw had managed to make a clean landing as well.

Silverpaw was caught off guard as Tearheart unexpectedly dodged his attack. He landed rather hard on the ground where his mentor had been standing hearbeats ago, and lay there for a moment, winded. The apprentice scrambled to his paws, shaking the dust from his long silver pelt, feeling embarassed. I didn't think of what would happen if my attack missed, Silverpaw realized in dismay.

Tearheart winced as she saw her apprentice's rough landing. Her whiskers twitched slightly in amusement, for she too had made the same mistake on her own first day of training. Still, Silverpaw did make good use of his strength and speed. "Good try," Tearheart said approvingly. "Next time, just remember not to stare me straight in the eye. You want to catch me by surprise, but your eyes give away your attack." She straightened up and got back into her defense position. "Try again."
((You can get me this time))

Silverpaw nodded solemnly. My eyes give away my attack... he repeated to himself. He leaped towards Tearheart without much further thought, letting his battle instincts take over. The silver apprentice made sure to keep his eyes fixed on the place he wasn't aiming to attack. He flashed out a paw moments before he collided with her, hoping to unbalance his mentor.

Tearheart was caught by surprise. It seemed like Silverpaw was going to aim for her shoulder, but his paws swiping by her legs proved otherwise. She lost her balance and stumbled, but managed to catch herself before she hit the ground. Tearheart straightened up and turned to her apprentice, a pleased look on her face. "That was much better," she praised him. "Next time, attack me again while I'm unbalanced. Don't wait for me to recover before launching your next attack." She resumed her defense position and motioned for Silverpaw to try again.
((Ok, you can make the perfect attack now))

Silverpaw purred happily at his mentor's praise. This time, he would make a perfect attack! The young apprentice ran at Tearheart once more, then leaped into the air, attacking in much the same way he had before. He kept his blue eyes fixed on Tearheart's face while he struck at her left shoulder. He landed with a small stumble, then whipped around to face his mentor, attempting to ram into her side. Silverpaw made sure to keep his claws sheathed so he could not hurt Tearheart.

Tearheart smiled approvingly at Silverpaw's firmer and more confident attack. The two consecutive blows were enough to unbalance her and knock her off her feet. She fell on her side, with Silverpaw at an advantage on top of her. Tearheart nodded with satisfaction at her apprentice's successful attack. "That was brilliant," she applauded. "I can see a lot of potential in you." She had already noticed that Silverpaw was attentive and focused on his goals. She knew he would become a great warrior one day, and was proud to be his mentor. Tearheart looked up at the sky and saw that the sun was already at its highest point. "I think that's enough training for today. I can teach you defense skills later on. We should head back to camp." She smiled back at her apprentice and said, "You lead the way."

Silverpaw stood there for a moment, in awe of what he'd done. "Thanks!" he meowed happily, shaking his pelt. The silver apprentice felt warm inside at Tearheart's words. She thought he had potential! He bounced away, towards the camp. "C'mon!" he turned back to make sure his mentor was following him. Still full of energy, Silverpaw set off back to camp.
