This is my first attempt at a plot for this site...it's a singular plot, nothing major, although Windmist does play a small part, so I need Wind's permission.
.Trading.Places.
There was only one cat Morningsky had ever trusted. And that was her identical twin sister Nightfur. All of SpringClan could remember the two of them as apprentices. You never saw one without the other. They were mirror images, partners in everything they did, be it good or bad.
Now Nightfur was dead, and Morningsky was on her own.
She was lost.
Nightfur had been the good sister. The one who not only knew right from wrong, but practiced it. The one who talked Morningsky out of schemes she knew were wrong. Morningsky had been the impulsive one, the wild and ‘more fun to be around’ sister. Yet she’d always made sure Nightfur was included in everything she did.
And now Nightfur was dead.
Morningsky didn’t remember much about Nightfur's death. She remembered perfectly what had led up to it. The twins had been twelve moons old, new warriors. That day, it was raining. The two had quarreled. Morningsky wanted the two of them to switch places for a day and see if anybody would notice. Nightfur had refused. Now that they were warriors, she thought they were too old for such kit-like games. Morningsky's temper flared up, and soon the two were yelling at each other. Finally, Nightfur ran out on her sister.
Morningsky's anger at her sister was instantly replaced by fear. The rain was coming in torrents, and it was messing up Nightfur's sense of direction. Nightfur had taken off in the direction of the waterfall , a place she both feared and hated. Fearful that she may lose her way and fall off the top of the waterfall, Morningsky took off after her sister.
The rain began to fall so hard Morningsky could barely see where she was going. She finally made it to the waterfall, but there was no sign of Nightfur. Morningsky looked around frantically, before she faintly heard Nightfur's voice being carried on the wind. She leapt towards the edge of the Falls and peered over to see Nightfur clinging to a loose tree root. That tree root was the only thing keeping Nightfur from plummeting to the rocky ground below.
Morningsky immediately tried to climb down to where her sister was, but the rocks were too slippery. She’d barely gone down four feet when she lost her footing, fell onto a narrow ledge, hit her head, and was knocked out.
One cat was brought back to SummerClan the next day. She was unconscious for two days and when she woke up, they called her Morningsky. She thought what had happened was just a bad dream at first, until Windmist gave her the terrible news: Nightfur had fallen to her death. It had taken the SpringClan cats a full day just to rescue Morningsky from the ledge, and they’d found Nightfur's broken body at the bottom of the waterfall and buried it.
Morningsky was stunned. She would have to go the rest of her life without her sister, without her other half. She stayed in Windmist's den for about three moons before taking up her warrior duties again. Yet the spark was gone from Morningsky . She didn’t smile like she used to. She was lost. She had acquired a strange fear of her reflection. If anyone tried to make her look at herself, she would scream and run away.
Fifteen moons later, she heard a voice she never thought she’d hear again.
It was Nightfur.
Morningsky was in the warrior’s den when she heard it. It was faint, but it was definitely there. Morningsky…Morningsky…
She impulsively asked the other cats if they heard the voice. They thought she was losing her mind. Morningsky thought she was imagining things, but the next day, she heard it again.
You stole my life. You took my life and left me for dead.
Nightfur's spirit had possessed Morningsky's body. And it all went downhill for her from there. Morningsky tried to tell everyone that her sister was possessing her, but nobody would listen. Nightfur would do nothing but laugh at her sister and slowly but surely, she began to figure out how to make Morningsky move.
SpringClan began to believe Morningsky was crazy. She would say things, then immediately contradict what she’d just said. Her body would spasm when Nightfur tried to take control and Morningsky fought back and it looked like she was having seizures. She didn’t eat. Her fur grew thin and ragged and her once beautiful face began to sag.
She was confined in Windmist's den, where Windmist could look after Morningsky and hopefully find a way to cure her. For awhile, Morningsky herself thought she’d gone insane. Nightfur did nothing but taunt her, repeating the same thing over and over. You stole my life…you stole my life…can’t you remember?
Finally, one night it was pouring down rain, exactly like it had the night Nightfur had died. Morningsky was dozing alone in Windmist's den when she found herself getting to her paws and leaving the den. Nightfur was controlling her. Nightfur made Morningsky walk out into the rain and look down into a puddle at her reflection. Morningsky fought back with everything she had, but Nightfur had become too strong. And then Morningsky saw something in her reflection that made her pause. Nightfur and Morningsky had been identical in every way but one: Morningsky's left eye had a fleck of brown in it. It was so small that a normal cat would never notice it. And when Morningsky stared at her reflection, she could not find the fleck of brown. It wasn’t there.
It was only then that Morningsky realized the truth.
The truth was that she was Nightfur.
She passed out right then and there in the rain, and was dragged back to Windmist's den. When she awoke, Windmist was there. And she said only one thing: “You know.”
“You knew the whole time that I’m Nightfur?” Morningsky yelled at the medicine cat. “Why didn’t you say anything?”
“Would you have believed me?” Windmist asked her. “When they brought you back from the waterfall, you were raving. You kept yelling ‘Morningsky! Morningsky! No! I won’t live without you!’. You woke once, and I called you Nightfur and you started screaming and convulsing. I thought your heart was giving out. But you just kept screaming that you were Morningsky until I managed to give you an herb to make you sleep. And when you woke up for good, I thought it best to pretend you were Morningsky. The mind is a delicate thing.”
“The ledge gave out.” Nightfur said suddenly, as if remembering a nightmare. “Morningsky tried to rescue me. She lost her footing and fell on a ledge. She had been knocked out. I was barely hanging onto that tree root…I couldn’t help her. The ledge wasn’t very strong, it crumbled, and she fell. I couldn’t help her.”
“When the patrol got there, the root had almost snapped. They managed to pull you up though. You were raving. They barely managed to get you back here. I feared you would go insane.” Windmist said softly.
Windmist left Nightfur alone then. “I told you that you stole my life.” Morningsky gloated. “Not so perfect now, are you, Nightfur?”
“You got what you wanted, now leave me alone! Haven’t you done enough?” Nightfur yelled out loud.
She could feel Morningsky smile inside of her. Then it suddenly felt like half of her soul was being torn out. A blinding light filled the den and Nightfur felt like her very life force was being sucked out of her. Then suddenly, there was nothing. She was alone.
And she was Nightfur.
