Faithpaw shifted sleepily in her bed of moss. It was early in the morning, and the sun was just beginning to rise. The sky was a creamy orange color, with thin fluffs of clouds decorating the horizon. Drowsily, Faithpaw yawned and sat up, uncurling her slim body, and remembered how much work had to be done today. She reminded herself that she still needed to find some more marigold for Hazelpaw, who had hurt himself just the other day while training with some of the other apprentices. The thought of the hazel colored tom made her heart flip over, just as it had always done to her. But she was a medicine cat apprentice now, Faithpaw reminded herself wearily. She could not let Hazelpaw, or any other tom for that matter, distract her from doing her duty. The Clan was counting on her to look after them no matter what, and she had already promised that she would do so. For a moment, Faithpaw looked over at Windmist's sleeping form beside her and wondered what the medicine cat would say if she knew her apprentice was in love. Sighing, Faithpaw pushed the thought of Hazelpaw aside and sorted her way through the many neat piles of fragrant herbs that surrounded her.

"Psst!" Windmist hissed. "What'cha doin' up so early?" She asked, looking at Faithpaw with curiosity. She padded to the entrance of her den to watch the rest of the clan awaken. She sat on her belly and yawned. She saw Mistheart pad to the entrance of the warriors' den and plop down on her belly as Windmist had done.

Faithpaw looked up, startled out of her thoughts, "Just sorting through these herbs," She replied, lowering her eyes guiltily, And thinking about Hazelpaw again, She added to herself. "We're out of marigold, and I believe Hazelpaw still needs some for his wound. He's hurt. Not badly though. That's a good thing. Not that I'm worried about him or anything. I mean, I am. Of course I am. Silly me." Faithpaw laughed nervously, she had never been good at lying. Better calm down, She told herself, You're rambling.
At that moment, Hazelpaw padded back from his hunt. He stepped through the entrance of the den and his eyes lit up when he saw Faithpaw. "Faithpaw!" He cried happily, dropping the two robins he had caught earlier this morning at her paws, "I haven't seen you in so long! Here, I caught these for you." He added, pushing the prey towards his friend.
Faithpaw blushed, almost expecting Hazelpaw to come over and press against her side or something. She was a little disappointed when he didn't, but accepted the food happily. "Thank you," She mewed shyly, "Now, I need to check on that wound of yours, so hold still, alright?" Slowly, she padded over and lifted his paw with hers to check out the cut on the underside of his leg. She took the opportunity to lean into him a little, and blushed when he brushed back, hoping Windmist was not looking. "It's completely healed!" She announced, finally pulling away when she had had enough, "Looks like we don't need that marigold after all!"
((Windmist should yell at her for this))

"Faithpaw!" Windmist hissed. "I told you that I'd make those decisions, remember? Now, go make yourself useful and go fetch the marigold that we 'don't need,' okay?" She pushed Faithpaw to the entrance. "And I know you like him, but as a medicine cat, you and I can't have kits, understand me?" Windmist sighed. "I've told you this so often before!"
Mistheart noticed the conflict and heaved herself onto her legs. She padded over gracefully. "Good morning, everyone!" She called cheerfully through the den.
"Good morning, Mistheart," Windmist sighed.
"A rough morning already, Ma?" Mistheart smiled.
"Just go, Faithpaw," Windmist sighed again, turning to the apprentice beside her.

Faithpaw gasped, her jaw hung open, and her eyes glittering with disbelief, How did she know? Faithpaw asked herself, I didn't make it that obvious, did I? "What? No!" She protested, "I don't... He's just a friend! No one ever said anything about kits!" She blushed, looking over at Hazelpaw to see that he was still watching. Faithpaw looked down at her paws, she didn't want to be separated from Hazelpaw, not just yet. This is so unfair. I know we can't have kits, but can't we at least spend a little time together? Finally, she looked up, her eyes dark with determination, "Fine." She meowed stubbornly, "You want those herbs so badly? I'll go get that marigold. Come, Hazelpaw. You can help me look." And before Windmist could protest, she whipped around and fled, with Hazelpaw pelting after her like a dog on a leash.
"Calm down," Hazelpaw murmured, pressing himself against Faithpaw's side, as the pair exited the den, "Everyone knows that's not how we feel about each other. We're just friends, alright? They wouldn't know. They don't know anything. They all think that if a she-cat and a tom are caught talking to each other, they are gonna end up having kits. Well they're wrong. They're all wrong. We're just friends." Hazelpaw was desperate to tell Faithpaw about Violetpaw while they were still on the topic of love, but decided it might be best to wait until they were out in the forest.
That's not why I'm upset, Faithpaw thought, her eyes were already beginning to fill up with tears, and she turned away so that Hazelpaw wouldn't see. I'm not upset because she's wrong. I'm upset because she's right, and because there's no way we could ever be with each other. She wished Hazelpaw would stop using the words 'just' and 'friends' like that together in a single sentence.

"I believe I sense a love triangle going on, here," Mistheart commented, her eyes softening.
"I know they think some grumpy old medicine cat is just being strict, but..." Windmist trailed off. "Every apprentice I've seen has gotten their privilege of being a medicine cat taken away because of a love affair." She sighed very heavily, deep in thought. "I just can't stand to see all these sick cats with only one medicine cat to help!" She dug her paw deep into the dirt to keep herself from showing her emotions too much. She sighed again, releasing her sadness. "Wait... love triangle?" Mistheart nodded.
"I spotted Hazelpaw near the edge of the boundary with another she-cat," Mistheart started. "Not from this clan, either! I could smell her scent even from as far away as I was!"
"Oh, no," Windmist sighed, digging her paw into the dirt again. Please don't get hurt, Faithpaw!

Faithpaw trudged back, her tail drooping and her eyes stinging with tears. She dropped the marigold at Windmist's paws and looked up at her with wide, hurt eyes. She didn't care if Windmist saw her tears. She was too heartbroken. "I got these for you," She mumbled weakly, her head bowed in shame. "And I wanted to say that I'm sorry for being such a mousebrain earlier. I... I don't know what I was thinking. It could never have worked out between us. I chose the path of a medicine cat after all." She smiled to herself and laughed at her stupidity. She was almost okay with it now. Then, remembering back, she didn't think it was so funny anymore. She ran over to her mentor and pressed her face into Windmist's neck, fresh tears pouring out of her eyes. "I'm over it now." She sobbed, "I'm over this whole thing. I'm over tom cats. Foxdung! Who needs them anyways?"

Her inner mother coming out, like she had whenever Mistheart had cried to her, Windmist comforted Faithpaw, giving her an affectionate lick on her forehead every so often. "I know, I know exactly how you feel," Windmist sighed. "My only problem was that my tom liked me back and it pained me so much when he found out that we couldn't be together. Sure, he was torn at first, then he moved on to another she-cat and there was nothing I could do." She sighed, almost seeing herself in Faithpaw. Mistheart padded over and wrapped her tail around Faithpaw, giving her affectionate licks, as well.

Faithpaw sniffed and looked up at the two she-cats comforting her. She felt much better now. "Thank you," She whispered weakly, she figured that she might as well tell them why she was so upset. "Hazelpaw likes Violetpaw..." was all she managed to choke out before bursting into tears once more. Before, she would have kept Hazelpaw's secret. Now, she didn't care if Mistheart was going to get mad at him or not. She was over him. "Violetpaw is so much prettier than me!" She whined, "How can he expect me to compete with her?" Suddenly, Faithpaw realized how childish she was being. Because he doesn't, She thought miserably, He knows you're a medicine cat. He knows you can't fall in love. He was never expecting you to compete with anyone. He didn't know you liked him. He wasn't trying to hurt you. Now Faithpaw felt awful. She didn't have the right to be mad at Hazelpaw. Not only that, but she had revealed Hazelpaw's secret. He trusted had her not to tell anyone. How could he ever trust her again? "Mistheart," She mewed hoarsely, "Please don't get mad at him."

Mistheart sighed. "Well, I'm leaving that up to Mothstar. I will have to tell her because it was against the rules I set for him, that all of SpringClan set for him. Or I'm going to make him tell her." She turned to the leader's den then out into the woods. "And Mothstar may even tell Violetpaw's clan leader or mentor about it, too. We'll just have to see what happens." She looked at Faithpaw's face. "And don't worry, I'll try to leave you out of it. I already knew that he'd crossed the boarder since I was put in charge to watch him so I spied on him a bit, which is what I'm supposed to do." She licked her forehead again.
Windmist was deep in thought of her own tragedies. I've been through this, too, Faithpaw, she thought to herself. And, yes, even though I ended up with a kit, it wasn't mine and neither was he...

Faithpaw gasped in horror. What have you done? She wailed silently. "It's alright," The distressed apprentice mumbled, "I understand. Do what you must." Inside, she was screaming. She should never have told. Even if she was upset, she still had no right to reveal his secret like that. She was so mouse brained! It wasn't his fault, and now he was going to have to get punished for her stupid mistake. How was he ever going to trust her again? How could he forgive her now? Could they still be friends? Of course not. Faithpaw suppressed a desperate whine and looked down at her pale grey paws. Of course he had to be punished. He had broken the warrior code after all, it was only fair. And besides, he had broken her heart as well. She felt so empty now, so meaningless... She remembered back on the moment they had in the forest. Their last moment together before he would abandon her forever. His warm pelt had been pressed up against hers, his tail brushing away her tears, his tongue rasping over her head. Then he turned to her... blue eyes met brown eyes... he opened that sweet mouth of his and began to speak... and then her heart shattered. Some last memory. Faithpaw thought to herself. But he had trusted her. He wouldn't have told her otherwise. Why couldn't she have been satisfied with that? Why did she have to want more out of him? It only made things worse. Much, much worse.

Mistheart turned back to Faithpaw. "Oh, and if you were curious, it wasn't through you that I found out. I was watching him, being his mentor and all." She continued walking, her shoulders slumped and her tail down toward Mothstar's den.
Windmist, on the other hand, was still lost in her thoughts.
[is mothstar ready to come in?]

((Mothstar is talking to Stormclaw and Mintpaw right now. You're going to have to post in Peaceful to tell her.)) Faithpaw sniffed, brushing the last of her tears away. Already she was beginning to feel a little better. Hazelpaw couldn't blame her. Mistheart had already known. Besides, there was really no point in worrying about something that has already been done. Hazelpaw was going to get punished one way or another. There was nothing she could do about it, and mourning her loss wouldn't help either. Now was the time to rebuild her broken heart, and take the path of a medicine cat seriously. No more tom cats. This time, she wasn't going to mess things up. Faithpaw pulled away from her mentor and over to the stalks of marigold she had picked earlier. It felt like such a long time ago. Gently, she stepped across the floor of the den and placed the sweet smelling herbs in a small, neat pile. Strangely, she didn't feel like she was doing it herself, it felt as if someone had taken over her body. Still, strange as it was, Faithpaw didn't protest. She let herself be controlled by that strange inner force, completely blocking out all thoughts of her beloved Hazelpaw.

Mistheart padded out to find Mothstar... [and here's where Mistheart enters the other thread...]
After realizing that Faithpaw's warm body left her side, Windmist snapped out of her odd reminiscence. She watched as Mistheart padded off before she turned to Faithpaw. "Are you okay?" She asked softly. Faithpaw didn't seem to be acting like herself.

Faithpaw nodded, "Uh huh," She meowed, smiling widely. Her paws ran over the many herbs she and Windmist had collected during Green-leaf. There should be enough to last SpringClan through Leaf-bare, and if not, she could always go out later today and pick some more. She leaned in and took in a deep breath, Faithpaw had always loved the sweet smell of herbs. It's amazing how calm you can be, especially after everything that has happened to you. She thought silently. Sighing, Faithpaw hung her head. It just wasn't working. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn't shake loose her problems. She was an emotional wreck. "Windmist, is it healthy to pretend you're okay when you're not?" She asked softly, no longer smiling. She knew Windmist knew what she meant, and sorted through the herbs some more to hide her feelings. After a moment, Faithpaw came across what she was looking for. Crouching down, she shook a few seeds out of a dried poppy head and licked them up. The familiar taste was bitter, but at the same time, it soothed her. She knew she shouldn't be using up the Clan's supply of poppy seed for her silly emotional needs, but she couldn't help it. The aching in her heart was just too unbearable.
